Security alert for iphone Users

A Canadian digital watchdog issued a warning to Apple users on Thursday, revealing the presence of spyware linked to the Israeli firm NSO. This spyware exploits a recently discovered vulnerability in Apple devices.

In a statement released by the organization, Citizen Lab disclosed that a member of a civil society organization based in Washington had their Apple device infected with NSO’s Pegasus spyware through this particular flaw. The organization is strongly advising users to exercise caution.

John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, situated at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, remarked, “This illustrates how civil society once again plays the role of an early warning system for highly sophisticated cyberattacks.”

However, Citizen Lab refrained from revealing the identity of the entity or the individual affected.

The digital watchdog has asserted that this vulnerability allows for the compromise of iPhone devices running the most recent iOS version (16.6) without the user’s awareness.

After investigating the concerns raised by Citizen Lab, Apple made adjustments to its products. Nonetheless, a spokesperson for the tech giant declined to provide further comments.

Citizen Lab suggested that users update their devices.

In a report by Al-Arabiya, an NSO representative did not offer immediate comments regarding the findings by Citizen Lab.

As a precautionary measure, the US government has blacklisted the Israeli company since 2021, citing alleged abuses, which included the surveillance of journalists and government officials.
