Tom Jones is one of the most successful Welsh singers of all time. He has sold over 100 million records and has been awarded several accolades, including the Ivor Novello Award, Grammy Awards, and an Order of the British Empire.

He is best known for his successful charting of singles throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including “It’s Not Unusual” and “What’s New Pussycat?”.

In the 1970s, he released his first album, which spawned two number one hit singles – “She’s a Lady,” “Till,” and “The Young New Mexican Puppeteer.”

The Rise to Fame of Tom Jones

Tom Jones is one of the most famous and well-loved singers. He rose to fame in the late 1960s as frontman of Tommy Scott and the Senators, a Welsh beat group.

His soulful voice and raspy delivery, “full-throated, robust baritone,” quickly made him a household name.

Jones has since released several successful solo albums, and his influence can be heard in various genres, from soul to pop to R&B.

Jones is an artist like no other. His voice and music style transcends traditional boundaries allowing him to craft a sound that switches fluidly from pop, R&B, country, soul, and gospel – genuinely like no other. In 2013, the BBC called Jones a ‘global musical icon.’

Starting his career during the 60s, he has racked up over a hundred million record sales in the UK with 28 Top 40 hits and 17 Top 40 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, including “It’s Not Unusual,” “What’s New Pussycat?”, the theme song for the James Bond film “Thunderball” and “Green Grass of Home.”

Of course, he’s also no stranger to throwing an occasional punch. Jones has been in his fair share of fights, having played the lead role in a television movie titled Pleasure Cove back in 1979.

He would make another acting appearance just a few short years later, this time in Tim Burton’s 1996 film Mars Attacks!

Of course, Jones is no stranger to having come up against tough opponents throughout his career – perhaps most famously during a fight scene in the hit 1971 film The Holy Blood and the Crescent Moon, where he garnered much praise for having bested Matt “The Dazzler” Hamon after which he declared “I am The Real Deacon Frost.

Jones earned a Grammy for the Best New Artist in 1966. In 1989, he earned an MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video for his single “Kiss.” Jones received two prestigious honors from the British Empire in 2000 and 2003.

He was honored as OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1998, followed by a knighthood in 2005, which was given to him for his contributions to music.
