The clothes we wear often reveal our personality. They tell much about social background, our status, profession, likes, dislikes, and us fashion consciousness etc. They give a fair idea of the man or woman concerned. The rich, wealthy and well off persons wear fine, costly, ornamented, fashionable clothes decorated often with jewels. The farmers, labourers and common men use simple, practical, homely and rough stuff. Businessmen also wear costly and fine clothes to reflect their social and family status. The kings, princes, princesses, nobles and courtiers of past years always wore very costly costumes ornamented with jewels, brooches, buckles and – precious stones.

Clothes are a very safe guide to determine one’s profession, position and likings. You can very well say if one is a boy scout, policeman, military personnel, school boy or an employee of a particular company by his uniform. Similarly, nusses, firefighters, cooks in hotels, receptionists have their own particular uniforms which reveal their identity and profession. On the basis of the clothes worn by a person you can very well judge if he or she belongs to a rich family, the average middle class or the poor working class. Clothes can also be used to hide one’s identity and character sometimes. While on the stage the actors and actresses wear dresses to suit their character and role. But as the bard has said that this world itself is a vast stage and we all actors and so put on clothes that suit our different roles. Clothes also show nationality and the faith to which one may belong.

Clothes protect us from heat, cold and other discomforts of climate and weather. In winter rain nor wear heavy woolen clothes, in summer light cotton clothes. Likewise dresses differ from climate to climate and region to region. They also differ according to one’s sex and age. Each age group has its own style in clothes. Old people wear a totally different type of clothes, as they are not fashion-conscious. Again clothes also reflect the occasion. On ceremonial occasions like marriage, party, festival etc. people wear gay, gaudy, colourful, costly and formal clothes. A girl or a boy on the occasion of her or his wedding is dressed in the best available finery. Special occasions demand special clothes and dress. On sad and solemn occasions like death, mourning, loss and tragedy people wear either white and simple clothes or black clothes to suit the mood and time of the happening.

Our clothes also mark the progress and history of our civilization. They indicate the various milestones on the path of development from the cave man in the hoary past to the present day man dressed in finely tailored suit. Clothes also distinguish man from other animals. They show how intelligent, wonderful and progressive man has been all these ages. They reflect his progress in various fields of science, technology, education, industry, culture and arts. Production of fine and costly clothes and dresses is a great art and requires expertise and mastery of the highest order.

Clothes cater to man’s desire for variety, change, novelty and styles. And this has given rise to chining fashion, designs and styles. It is a huge worldwide industry and billions and billion of rupees have been invested in it. Fashion designers and textile producers are busy day and night to develop new fashions, fabrics, designs and styles to suit the fast changing tastes of the people. Fashion in clothes change more rapidly than even weather and so the people concerned have always to be very alert, watchful and quick to create new, attractive and appearing clothes to satisfy the moods, whims, likes and tastes of the people. There are fashion shows, beauty contests, and exhibitions of clothes and fabric all the year round. And people are making huge profit out of it.

In Pakistan textile industry is one of the biggest and very good sources of earning foreign exchange. In this fashion world the change is always welcomed. One is hardly ever tired of new and novel fashions in clothes and everyday new designs are being discovered. For example, during 70’s bell-bottoms and flares were a great rage in the young men and women. Now a days, teenagers like to wear drainpipe trousers and short tight shirts. Bell sleeves, minis, slacks and tights are once again in fashion.

Clothes and their ever-changing styles tell how restless man has been in terms of change, experimentation, novelty, variety and unconventionality. Today Pakistani people are more open to western influences and so short and long figure-hugging clothes and stretch jeans are very popular. But at the same time traditional and ethnic dresses have their own importance.

Undoubtedly, clothes mirror one’s attitudes, ideas, nay the whole personality. You can very well and safely judge a person by the clothes he usually wears. They’re cost, colours, designs, styles and cuts very much tell the state of mind of the person. One lets the dress suit to one’s taste and mood. Man ever wants to be dressed as fine as he can. Beautiful feathers make beautiful birds and attractive dresses make attractive men and women. They impress others in a way that nothing else can. Clothes have become symbol of the wearer’s personality. Clothes make the man and open the door to success. But there can be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. And one has to be aware of such people and their disguises.
