I begin with the name of Allah, the awarder of the scriptures, holy books to mankind. The Torat, the Zabur, the Bible, the Holy Quran and our religious books ordain mankind to lead a good and virtuous life. They teach the cardinal principles of goodness, truth and justice. Morality is the highest essence of all religions. Without morality, there cannot be happy in life.

The Holy Quran is a complete code of life. Without books the humanity would have been in darkness. There would have been no progress of civilization. In fact, civilization is molded by books. We are indebted to books for physical, mental and moral cultures. Books are the treasure house of all knowledge and wisdom. All creative arts are the great achievements of books. Without books the world would have been like a dry desert. Life would have been dull and uninteresting.

Nowadays the whole world is flooded with books. There are books on General Science, Medical Science, History, Biography, Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Religion, Arts, Languages, and in all the fields of human knowledge. All writers, thinkers, philosophers, artists, scientists and social – benefactors have built up the beautiful edifice of our civilization on books.

Books on works of art, poetry, painting, sculpture, music, oratory are the noblest gift of creative minds. Poetry stimulates our imagination and appeals to finer sentiments and emotions. Music is said to be food of the soul. Works on architecture, painting and sculpture are the richest possessions of mankind. Books are the bricks or blocks of education. The school, college and university libraries are full of books. Public libraries cater for the needs of reading public. Books are well arranged and cataloged according to the various branches of knowledge and departments. The whole education system is fed with books. Students, teachers, scholars and research workers depend on books for knowledge and increase in the sum total of knowledge (research).

Books not only make us enlightened, cultured and civilized, but they also supply mental food to the general readers. Reading opens our mind for understanding; increases our knowledge and broadens our sympathies. The present social, political, economic and scientific progress would have been impossible without books.

Bad books on crimes, sex and fornication are current coins. They spoil the human character and dynamite moral values. Good books polish and enable human character the bad corrupt human mind and society. Students make criminal use of books by tearing them and for unfair means in the exams.

“Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books history is silent; literature, dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at stand still.”

(Barbara W. Tuchman)
