Man is crown of creation. He has rightly been called Lord of creation. He is supreme being. Everything in the universe has been created for man. Creation minus man, is meaningless. Indeed, nature is beautiful because of man. He has been called Lord of creation because he has got the capacity to think and capacity to speak, to communicate. Thinking makes us what we are. If our thought are good, our actions are bound to be – good. Accordingly, he has good or bad manners.

Man is a free and responsible being. He is responsible for what he does. What we do and what we ‘should do’, are two different things. ‘Should do stands for morality and good manners. He projects both good and evil on others. The way in which he behaves or his manners, are the index of his ‘self, his smallness or greatness.

Manners are part and parcel of culture. “Culture’ is a composite term. It is made up of three things”

  1. Artifices
  2. Behaviour patterns
  3. Belief system (religion)

Our Belief and behaviour patterns make us what we are. Manners are rooted in good breeding. It is the home from where he/she starts his/her life. Therefore, it the duty of the parents to teach good manners to their children. It is true like parents like children, like rulers like people. Manners mean social conduct or good behaviour. Indeed manners reveal character. If wealth is lost, nothing is lost, if health is lost something is lost; but if the character is lost, everything is lost. There are both good and bad manners. Man lives in society. Good social conduct and behaviour stand for social etiquettes, respect for the superiors, love for the juniors, honest dealings, respect for laws, obedience and righteousness, A man’s greatness can be judged by his manners.

Good manners attract others, bad manner repulses them. Good manners win praise, bad, condemnation. Good manners are like a passport to good society. We must keep in mind that we are responsible to others and responsible for others. Bad manners project bad influence on others. In fact character good self is the sum total of good manners. Those who wash their dirty linen in public, are like black sheep.

Little courtesies and civilities like ‘salutation please ‘thank you’ and ‘excuse me’, are part of man’s character. They keep the machinery of life working smoothly. Man has been called the crown and glory of creation. He lives in deeds. The greatness of man can be summed up in the beautiful words of Shakespeare.

“What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculties! inform and moving, how express and admirable! in action, how like an angel! in apprehension, how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals.”
