- Four chief goals in life.
- Choosing a doctor’s profession to realize goal.
- Doing public or political work.
- I shall never be mean, dishonest or false in life.
Every one in the world, however great or small, has some goal in life. A prince may have an goal to be a king and a king may have an goal to be an emperor. A clerk goals at being a head-clerk and a peon goals at being a head-peon. Some one’s goal is for fame, some one’s for power, some one’s for money, while some goal at acquiring knowledge.
Accordingly. I have also a high goal of life, though I do not known how far I would be able to realize it. I do not want to run after money, nor after cheap fame or popularity. My goal in life is to get happiness for myself and also for others. To realize this goal, I have resolved to be a doctor and spend my life in the service of others. I believe, it is a good selection. If I am a good doctor, I would get a lot of money, which I would use for the service of the poor. I would not charge high fees and shall never exploit the needy and the poor at the most critical moments of their life. If I were a good doctor, I would, of course, get fame and popularity.[the_ad id=”17141″]
But I would see that I do not become puffed up with pride due to thiş fame. Being a good doctor, having connections with several families, I would naturally acquire power and influence, but I would see that I do not abuse my power for any ignoble, or undeserving work. In short, I have fixed my goal to be a doctor, not because it is a profession, which would fetch more wealth, fame or power than any other profession, but because it gives better and greater opportunities to serve mankind in their moments of urgent need, when they are involved in a struggle of life and death.
My goal does not end there. I shall devote a part of my time in doing free work in hospitals and charitable dispensaries. I would also devote a part of my time to the welfare of my country and my people. I would take to politics or any public work to serve my country and play my humble part in the social, political, religious and educational reforms, resulting in the progress of my country.
Whether I succeed or fail in my goal, I shall never make wealth or power at the end of my life. I shall never run after the bubble of fame, but shall always work for the happiness of others, while no denying a reasonable share of happiness of myself and my family. In the realization of my goal, I shall follow the principles of truth and justice. Whether I achieve anything substantial in my life is another matter, but I shall always strive to keep my goal pure, honest and honorable. At any rate, I would never dream of living a selfish life of a beast.
