There is nothing consistent about human behavior except its tendency to drift towards evil. No amount of social, cultural and educational progress could ever eradicate the deep roots of evil from society. We, too, have got a number of social evils in our country. It is not the moral duty of any single individual, department or non-government organization to wage a war against social evils. It is rather the duty of all of us to work for the removal of social evils which are constantly on the increase in recent times. The love of money and the lack of it is the root cause of all kinds of evil.

Lack of education and improper moral training has also contributed a lot to the spread of these evils. Black-marketing, dowery, smuggling, bribery, child-lifting, gang rapes, beggary, adulterations addiction, smoking, poverty, disease, and ignorance are the main social evils which are shaking the very foundation of our country.[the_ad id=”17141″]

Beggary

Beggary is a great social evil and it widely exists in our country. You may go to a mosque or a shrine, to the bazaar or a street, to the railway station or bus stop, you are surely going to be bothered by the army of beggars. They will keep following you unless you give them something in charity. This is an extremely serious problem and can be solved by opening poor-houses or charity-homes for those who are disabled or really unable to earn their living. The literacy rate of our country is alarmingly low.

Dowry Custom

Resultantly, people are superstitious. and dogmatists. They have to follow many odd customs on the occasion of a childbirth, marriage or funeral and waste their hard-earned money just to maintain their social prestige. The poor usually have to borrow heavy amounts to celebrate the marriages of their sons or daughters. They are forced to prepare a great dowry for their daughter, otherwise, she will not be respected in her new home. Legislative measures should be immediately introduced to restrict or even abolish the dowry system.

Black Marketing

Our businessmen and shopkeepers are ever ready to jump at each and ever chance of hoarding and black-marketing. They hide the essential commodities of life and create the artificial shortage in the market so that they may sell them at much higher rates than actual ones. They are admittedly the worst enemies of our country and should be given extremely severe punishments.

Kidnapping

“Evil often triumphs, but never conquers.” Roux

Kidnapping and gang-rapes are comparatively modern social ills. These savages are really an awful nuisance and menace to our society. The government and the masses should join their hands for the eradication of these evils. Capital punishment should be awarded to those who commit these crimes.[the_ad id=”17142″]

Corruption or Bribery

Corruption, bribery, smuggling, adulteration are also great social evils. These evils are generally the result of a common desire to become rich overnight. The nasty habits of smoking and drug addiction are hugely harmful to our society. Thousands of young people are doomed every year due to intoxication. The law enforcing agencies and the public should make concerted efforts to combat the trafficking of narcotics and their use.

The major problem of our society is that everyone is fully aware of his rights, but very few know their social obligations. The Ulema and the educated persons must come forward in order to reconstruct society according to the teachings of Islam. They should not shut their eyes towards the various social evils that are likely to undermine the very foundations of our homeland. Much remains to be done in the way of social reforms in Pakistan. But first of all, we will have to determine our goal be achieved then we should look for the officials and workers who are patriotic, far-sighted and courageous enough to remain steadfast to their principles against all the hostile elements for the great cause of humanity.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke
