Short Essay on Corruption or Bribery
“First corruption takes us to hell’s door and then leads us to crime that forces us to enter it.”
What is Corruption?
A person is “corrupt” when he is dishonest in his intentions and actions. So “corruption” means dishonesty in thinking and action. Bribery, using one’s official position improperly and using the money or material of others without their permission are some very common forms of corruption. Political corruption means cheating in elections, buying the loyalty of members of assemblies, offering ministries to them to win their support, and so on. Quite a few of the candidates in elections try to get votes in corrupt ways.
Bribery is the most common form of corruption in different countries and societies. We find so many people offering and giving money and things to government servants to get their work done. We see students giving money to the staff in the examination halls to copy, which can be called educational corruption. It brings down standards of education and destroys the efforts and hopes of thousands of honest students.
Selling goods in the black market (selling goods at more than market prices) is a serious form of corruption. Many businesspeople sell those things at very high prices that are in short supply. For example, some medicines are available (can be had from) only at very few medical stores. Those medical stores can easily start selling them in the black market. The common people, especially the patients, suffer much when they cannot buy the medicines easily. Today we find the above and several other forms of corruption all around. That is why we say that our society has gone corrupt.[the_ad id=”17141″]
Corruption is the result of the wide gap between the rich and the poor in our society. Poor government servants like police officers (policemen) and clerks sometimes have to take bribes to meet the expenses of their families. The government should try to improve (better) their economic condition by keeping the prices of things of daily use low and by increasing (raising) their salaries. The government should check, through law, all the banks and finance companies from misusing the money of the people. Political corruption during elections, bribery, and use of recommendation and connections to get jobs should be checked through strict rules and social reforms. This is what the Quaid-e-Azam advised us to do when he asked us never to allow favoritism and jobbery (corrupt dealing) in the country. Just see how much unthankful and disobedient to the Quaid we are by allowing widespread corruption in different forms and colors.

Thriving corruption and poverty eradication cannot go hand in hand. The masses become the victims of the greedy cops, absentee School teachers and medical staff in government hospitals. People are denied justice from the courts of law. People start living on their illegal or tax evaded earnings, and the majority of politicians feel absolutely no shame at their defaulted loans. Reluctantly, the economy of the country gradually collapses.
As the whole system of moral, religious and social values is crippled by corruption, the difference between good and bad, right and wrong virtually disappears. A widespread dissatisfaction always prevails over such a society, and it ultimately welcomes a bloody revolution or a military coup. So, all this goes to prove that corruption and bribery is the most dangerous poison for our society. Corruption turns the country into a lawless terrain where people act as if they were above the law. Most of the corrupt people do not care about the possible allegations.[the_ad id=”17150″]
“Corruption is like a ball of snow, when once set rolling it must increase.” Charles Colton
In most of the cases of corruption, the lure of money entices hearts, buys morals and enslaves the passions of the people involved in the phenomenon. Corruption and bribery have almost become the problem of problems these days. Graft, bribery and payoffs are the universal terms used for this malady. It is usually named baksheesh, dash, moridida, and rishwat in Egypt, Kenya, Mexico and Pakistan respectively. Corruption and bribery is as old as human history itself. We see that God introduced the anti-corruption laws to man very far in the past when He told Moses, Neither shall thou take bribes which blind the wise and pervert the words of the just, besides, we have the saying of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him).
“Bribe-giver as well as bribe-taker are both doomed for hell.”
So corruption has never been a celebrated word in any religion, in any creed and in any social or political system. But ironically the whole human history is marred by the events and acts of corruption. Almost unquestionably, Pakistan is also suffering from the malady of corruption and bribery. There is hardly any department that is free from this alarming curse. As a matter of fact, we seem to have developed a sort of immunity towards corruption. So, corruption has become a way of life which is constantly threatening the very foundations of our society. Indulgence in corruption is no longer looked upon as an immoral and shameful act. The cultural and the moral codes or examples of the earlier saints and the heroes of honesty are simply powerless to inspire us and produce any healthy influence on the masses at large.

A fair and honest government official always feels uneasy or misfit in the system overcrowded and overloaded by the corrupt personnel. Although corruption has always existed in the sub-continent yet the British were able to check it by their civil and military officials. When they departed, we immediately returned to our old routine. Successive governments professed to uproot corruption but often left the country more corrupt. This sort of atmosphere sharply degenerates society.
Now the question is how this monstrous evil can be tackled. The lack of accountability admittedly waters the plant of corruption. Maxim Politics is the last refuge of scoundrels needs to be changed without fail. The outcome of the battle against corruption will depend on the basic transformation of bureaucratic culture and sweeping changes in rules and procedures. As corruption has become the lifeblood of our system, it would be an uphill task to eradicate corruption from society.
So far the elimination of corruption and bribery is a dream that needs practical measures to become a reality. Let us awake to find ways and means to get this dream converted into an inevitable reality. Although the complete removal of malpractices is next to impossible yet the people of today can reduce it to a tolerable extent. But all this is not possible unless we are able to arrange or prepare some antidote for the chronic disease of corruption.
“Surely God wrongs not men, but themselves men wrong.” Koran
Briefly, we would have to start a crusade against corruption. We will have to lead a simple and peaceful life instead of a life of great luxury. We will have to brush aside the VIP culture. We will have to give up unnecessary rites, customs, and snobberies. We will have to think in terms of our common interest and the progress of our country. The alarm bells have started to ring loud and clear but the issue of belling the cat is still there to be addressed. NAB or Anti-corruption Department cannot solve this problem without launching a new awareness campaign to make the people familiar with the current strategy. Anyhow, desperate, concerted and unceasing efforts are required to get our society free from the strong clutches of corruption before it causes our death as a nation by drowning us in its deadly poison.
